Custom Living Wall
Installation Services
Vertically engineered systems of live plants, designed for your space and maintained by professionals who guarantee their performance. Commercial and residential installations throughout Central Iowa.
Living Design — from Concept to Care
More Than a Plant on a Wall
A living wall is one of the most powerful expressions of professional biophilic design services — a vertically mounted, irrigated, and lighted system of live plants engineered to thrive in your specific commercial or residential environment. Trendy Gardener designs, installs, and maintains custom living walls throughout Des Moines and Central Iowa.
Every installation starts with a site assessment — not a product catalog. Light levels, wall substrate, HVAC proximity, irrigation access, and spatial scale all determine what system and plant palette will perform in your space before a single plant is specified.

Engineering First
Engineered Living Wall Systems Built to Last
The plants are visible. The engineering is what keeps them alive. We select the system after assessing your space — not before.
System 01
Hydroponic Living Walls
Nutrients and water delivered directly to root zones through a recirculating reservoir. Lighter, cleaner, and more precise than soil — the preferred system for commercial lobbies, hotels, and retail environments where reliability and clean aesthetics are non-negotiable.
System 02
Soil-Based Green Walls
Modular panels filled with lightweight growing medium, supporting a wider species variety including larger tropicals. Well-suited to residential installations and atrium spaces where a naturalistic aesthetic is the design goal. Structural load assessed before recommendation.
System 03
Automated Irrigation
Timed drip systems connected to your building water line or a self-contained reservoir with auto-top-off. Drainage managed with waterproof liner systems and collection trays engineered to the wall dimensions — no water damage risk to your building interior.
System 04
Integrated Grow Lighting
Full-spectrum LED fixtures delivering the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) levels required by your specific plant palette. Specified by footcandle requirement per zone, selected for low heat output and architectural integration — not an afterthought.
Why Living Walls Work
Benefits of Installing a Living Green Wall
A living wall delivers returns across environmental, acoustic, psychological, and brand dimensions. Here is what the research shows — and what our clients experience in practice.
Natural Air Filtration and Oxygenation
Live plants interact with indoor air through transpiration, stomatal gas exchange, and rhizosphere activity at the root zone. Densely planted vertical installations meaningfully contribute to humidity regulation and reduction of airborne VOCs common in commercial interiors. The WELL Building Standard's Air concept recognizes the role of interior vegetation in supporting indoor air quality.
Sound Absorption and Acoustic Comfort
Living walls function as soft, irregular surfaces that absorb and diffuse sound energy rather than reflecting it — reducing reverberation in open-plan offices, hotel lobbies, and restaurants with hard reflective surfaces. We factor acoustic performance into proposals when noise is a client pain point.
Visual Impact and Commercial Brand Identity
A well-designed living wall is a brand asset. It communicates investment in the quality of the environment and the wellbeing of the people in it. The Interface Human Spaces study found that 33% of office workers globally would choose a job at a company with a more biophilic workplace over one without.
Research-Backed Outcomes
- 15% higher employee wellbeing in biophilic workplaces (Interface, 2015)
- 6% higher self-reported productivity (Interface, 2015)
- 101% higher cognitive function in improved IEQ environments (Harvard COGfx)
- WELL Building Standard Air credit support

How It Works
Our Living Wall Installation Process
From first conversation to finished wall — a predictable, structured process with no guesswork on your end.
Site Consultation and Environmental Assessment
We visit your space and measure what matters: natural light levels by wall, wall substrate and structural capacity, HVAC placement, water access, and the scale and sight lines of the intended installation. This determines system type, plant palette, lighting, and irrigation approach before any design work begins.
Custom Design and Investment Proposal
A custom proposal covering system selection, plant palette with species specifications, 3D visualization for commercial projects, and an itemized investment breakdown separating design, materials, installation, and maintenance. Commercial clients receive a project scope document for internal approval.
Procurement and Plant Acclimation
Plants sourced from our curated specialty grower network — not general nursery stock. Acclimated before installation to ensure they are adjusted to indoor conditions and healthy on install day. Healthy plants on day one means healthy plants six months from now.
Professional Installation
Structural mounting, irrigation connection and testing, grow lighting installation and commissioning, and final plant placement and styling. We protect your floors and surfaces. Commercial installs coordinate around your business hours. Site is left clean and complete on handover day.
Ongoing Maintenance and Plant Guarantee
Installation is the beginning. Clients enrolled in our premium indoor plant maintenance and care program receive scheduled visits, precision irrigation checks, nutrient management, pruning, pest scouting, and our plant replacement guarantee — if a plant under our care declines, we replace it at no additional cost.
Plant Maintenance and Care
Professional Maintenance and Plant Guarantees
A living wall without professional maintenance is a liability. Without consistent care, even a well-installed system will decline within months. We eliminate that risk entirely.
Trendy Gardener Guarantee
The Plant Replacement Guarantee
For all clients enrolled in a Trendy Gardener maintenance program: if any plant under our care loses its vitality and cannot be restored, we replace it at no additional cost. Your investment is protected from installation day forward.
Every living wall maintenance visit includes irrigation system inspection, nutrient solution management, leaf cleaning, pruning, pest scouting, fertilization, and plant health documentation. Commercial clients can also access our plant leasing program — design, installation, and maintenance bundled into a single monthly program.

How to Choose
Living Wall vs. Preserved Moss Wall
Both transform interior surfaces with natural material. The right choice depends on your environment, maintenance preferences, and design intent.
| Living Wall | Preserved Moss Wall | |
|---|---|---|
| Plant Type | Live, growing plants | Glycerin-preserved botanicals — no living tissue |
| Maintenance | Required — irrigation, pruning, pest management | None — no watering, soil, or sunlight needed |
| Light Required | Moderate to high — grow lighting for low-light spaces | None — thrives in windowless environments |
| Air Quality | Yes — transpiration and rhizosphere activity | Minimal — no photosynthesis in preserved material |
| Acoustic Benefit | Yes — plant mass absorbs sound | Yes — moss structure dampens sound effectively |
| Installation | Moderate to high — irrigation and lighting required | Low — lightweight, mounts to most wall surfaces |
| Best For | Spaces with light, maintenance commitment, maximum biophilic impact | Low-light environments, zero-maintenance requirement |
If your space lacks reliable natural or supplemental light, or if a fully maintenance-free installation is the priority, a preserved moss wall may be the right choice. Many clients choose both — a living wall in a well-lit signature space and preserved moss panels in interior corridors where light is limited. We design cohesive biophilic systems across multiple surfaces.
Why Trendy Gardener
Why Des Moines Businesses and Homeowners Choose Us
Living wall installation is not a commodity service. The margin between a thriving wall and a declining one comes down to engineering discipline, plant knowledge, and consistent follow-through.
End-to-End Ownership
Design, source, install, and maintain. One team. One point of contact. No subcontractors managing plants someone else installed.
Des Moines–Specific Expertise
We design for Central Iowa's building stock, light conditions, HVAC characteristics, and climate. Generic solutions from out-of-market companies rarely account for these variables.
Specialty Plant Sourcing
We source from curated specialty growers. Plants arrive acclimated, healthy, and selected for your specific conditions — not pulled from general nursery inventory.
Engineering Before Aesthetics
We assess structural load, water access, drainage, and lighting before discussing plant palettes. A beautiful wall that fails at the engineering level is not a beautiful wall six months from now.
Plant Replacement Guarantee
Maintenance program clients are covered. If a plant under our care declines, we replace it. No negotiation, no additional charge, no friction.
Interior Design Collaboration
We work alongside your interior designer, architect, or facilities team — coordinating scope, timeline, and aesthetics so the living wall enhances the design intent of the space.
