Aglaonema Care Guides

Aglaonema is the most low-light tolerant foliage genus commonly sold, and it prefers to dry partway down between waterings. This is the plant to specify when a room genuinely has poor light and a live plant still has to look good.

Sold as Chinese evergreen, aglaonema ranges from deep green cultivars that handle very low light to pink and red variegated forms that need noticeably more to keep their colour. The greener the plant, the darker the position it will tolerate.

Common problems

Pale washed-out colour on a pink cultivar means too little light. Soft yellowing stems at the base mean the soil is staying wet. Cold damage shows as grey-green blotches — aglaonema dislikes anything under about 60°F.
