Anthurium Care Guides

Anthuriums want bright indirect light, high humidity, and a chunky airy mix that never stays soggy. They are less forgiving than most aroids — the velvet-leaved species in particular fail quickly in dry air or dense potting soil.

The genus splits into two groups worth treating differently. Flowering anthuriums, sold by bloom colour, are comparatively easy and tolerate ordinary indoor humidity. Velvet and strap-leaf species such as clarinervium, crystallinum and vittariifolium are collector plants that need consistent humidity and very open media.

Common problems

Brown crisping leaf edges mean humidity is too low. Yellowing lower leaves mean the mix is holding water. No new blooms usually means not enough light rather than a fertiliser problem.
