Dracaena & Snake Plant Care Guides

Dracaena and snake plants are the most drought-tolerant and low-light-tolerant structural plants available, and the fastest way to kill either is overwatering. Both store water in thick roots or rhizomes and prefer to dry out almost completely between waterings.

Botanically these are now one group — snake plants were reclassified from Sansevieria into Dracaena. They cover the same ground in a room: vertical structure, architectural form and tolerance of conditions that kill most foliage plants. This is why they dominate commercial specifications.

What they share

Dry-down between waterings, tolerance of low light, sensitivity to cold, and a dislike of fluoride in tap water — dracaenas in particular show brown tips from treated water.

Common problems

Mushy base means root rot from overwatering — the single most common cause of death in this group. Brown tips on dracaena usually mean fluoride or salt build-up; flush the soil. Leaves falling over on a snake plant mean it has been watered too often or is in a pot far too large.
