Flowering & Seasonal Plant Care Guides

Flowering and seasonal plants are grown for a display period rather than indefinite life indoors, and most are best treated as temporary. Poinsettias, florist azaleas, cyclamen and mums are forced for a season; keeping them going afterwards is possible but rarely worth the effort.

The group also includes lipstick and goldfish plants, which are genuine long-term houseplants that flower repeatedly given bright light, and amaryllis, which reblooms annually from the bulb if given a dormancy period.

Common problems

Blooms finishing quickly usually means the room is too warm. Buds dropping before opening means a change in light, temperature or watering. No repeat flowering on lipstick or goldfish plants means insufficient light.
