Foliage Plant Care Guides

These are the foliage plants that do not sit neatly inside a single large genus — peace lilies, ZZ plants, dieffenbachia, homalomena, cast iron plants and others. Most are aroids, and most share the same broad requirement: medium indirect light and a dry-down between waterings.

Several of the toughest indoor plants live in this group. ZZ plant and cast iron plant tolerate genuinely poor light and long gaps between waterings. Peace lily is the clearest communicator of any houseplant — it wilts dramatically when thirsty and recovers within hours.

Tolerance of medium and low light. Dry-down between waterings. Most are toxic to cats and dogs — check the individual guide before placing one in a pet household.

Common problems

A wilting peace lily is thirsty, not dying. Yellowing ZZ stems mean overwatering — the rhizome stores water and needs very little. Brown leaf edges on dieffenbachia usually mean dry air or salt build-up in the soil.
