Hoya Care Guides

Hoyas want bright indirect light, a very open chunky mix, and to dry out fully between waterings. They are epiphytes, not soil plants — treat them closer to an orchid than a philodendron and they will thrive on neglect.

Hoya is the largest single genus in this collection. The waxy leaves store water, which is why they tolerate being forgotten and resent being kept damp. Flowering is the reason most people collect them, and it depends almost entirely on light and maturity.

What they share

Tight pots. Hoyas flower better when slightly root-bound and should not be moved up a pot size until genuinely necessary. Never cut off the bare flower stalk, called a peduncle — it reblooms from the same spur year after year.

Common problems

No flowers almost always means insufficient light. Shrivelled leaves can mean either underwatering or root rot — check the roots before adding water. Yellow leaves near the base usually mean the mix is holding moisture.

Thin-leaved species need more humidity than the thick succulent-leaved ones; the leaf tells you how much drought it can take.
