Moth orchids want bright indirect light, a bark mix that dries between waterings, and to be left alone. The most common way to kill one is watering on a schedule into a decorative pot with no drainage.

Phalaenopsis is the orchid sold nearly everywhere, and it is genuinely undemanding once you stop treating it like a houseplant. Roots need air as much as water, which is why they are grown in bark rather than soil and often in clear pots.

Water thoroughly, let it drain completely, then wait until the roots turn silvery. Never leave the pot standing in water. Do not cut the flower spike until it browns entirely — many rebloom from the same spike.

Common problems

Limp wrinkled leaves usually mean root loss from overwatering, not thirst. No rebloom means insufficient light or no seasonal temperature drop. Yellowing lower leaves one at a time is normal ageing.
