Philodendrons want bright indirect light, soil that dries partway down between waterings, and warmth. Almost every philodendron problem traces back to one of three things: too little light, soil kept wet, or a pot that never drains. Get those right and the genus is forgiving.

Philodendron covers climbers, self-heading forms and the large-leaved Thaumatophyllum species. Climbers benefit from a moss pole; self-headers need floor space more than height. Variegated cultivars need more light than green ones to hold their pattern, and reverting leaves usually mean the plant has been moved somewhere darker.

Common problems

Yellow lower leaves are usually overwatering. Small new leaves with long gaps between them mean insufficient light. Brown crispy edges point to dry air or inconsistent watering rather than underwatering alone.
