Pothos & Scindapsus Care Guides

Pothos and Scindapsus tolerate low light but grow properly in bright indirect light, and both prefer to dry out substantially between waterings. They are the most forgiving climbers in the aroid family, which is why they are so often the first plant someone keeps alive.

The two genera are frequently confused. True pothos is Epipremnum; satin and silver types are Scindapsus, which have thicker, matte leaves and tolerate drought slightly better. Both climb or trail, and both produce larger leaves when given something to climb.

Common problems

Long bare stems with leaves only at the ends mean too little light. Yellowing leaves near the soil usually mean too much water. Variegated forms losing their pattern have been moved somewhere darker — white sections carry no chlorophyll and need brighter conditions to be worth keeping.
