Succulent & Cactus Care Guides

Succulents and cacti need direct sun for several hours a day and soil that dries completely between waterings. Indoors, the limiting factor is almost never water — it is light. A succulent stretching toward a window is telling you the position is wrong.

This is the largest group in the collection, covering true cacti, echeveria and sedum rosettes, euphorbias, jade and elephant bush, string-of plants, aloe, haworthia, kalanchoe and lithops. Many euphorbias look like cacti but are unrelated and have caustic sap.

What they share

Gritty fast-draining mix, never standard potting soil. Water thoroughly then leave alone until bone dry. Much less water in winter. Terracotta helps.

Common problems

Stretching with pale wide-spaced leaves is etiolation from too little light and cannot be reversed — only prevented on new growth. Mushy translucent leaves mean overwatering. Shrivelled wrinkled leaves mean genuine thirst, which is far rarer than people assume.
